Import from Obsidian

Open your Obsidian vault directly in Moss without exporting it first.

How it works: Your Obsidian vault is already a folder of Markdown files. In most cases, you can open that folder directly in Moss.
1

Open the vault in Moss

In Moss, use File → Open... and choose your Obsidian vault folder. Choose the folder itself, not a single .md file inside it.

Obsidian stores notes as Markdown files inside a vault, and image files can be stored in different places depending on your Obsidian settings, for example in the vault root, next to the note, in a specific attachments folder, or in a subfolder under the current note. Because those links can point to files elsewhere in the vault, it is important to open the whole vault in Moss so your images show up reliably in Moss.

Once you open the folder in Moss, all of your notes will appear as notes under External. You can edit these notes in Moss, and Moss will save back to wherever that folder is on your computer.

2

Know what stays in Obsidian

Moss uses the Markdown files in your vault. It does not use your Obsidian themes, plugins, or settings from the .obsidian folder.

Notes that depend on Obsidian-only plugins or custom syntax may need cleanup in Moss.
